The role of genetic counseling

Some plans may require genetic counseling for certain tests. When Carelon Medical Benefits Management receives a genetic testing order request and genetic counseling is required but has not yet occurred, Carelon can provide a list of genetic counseling providers. Efforts are made to limit this list to in-network providers, but independent verification of network status is advised.

If you are a genetic counselor providing counseling services to patients covered by the genetic testing program, please make sure to register in OptiNet® to ensure you are included in this list. While registration only takes a few minutes, please allow up to 24 hours for data processing.

Program designs vary by health plan. We encourage you to review the FAQs for each patient’s plan on the Resources page.
